Cracked or chipped teeth are one of the more common dental complaints, and they can be caused by a number of reasons. Whilst minor cracks are rarely cause for concern, it is important to have any cracks or chips seen to by your dentist to prevent further dental complications arising down the track.  In this blog post we’ll be highlighting some of the common reasons for cracked teeth, symptoms to look out for and complications which may arise if left untreated.

Common Causes of Cracked/Chipped Teeth

Most cracked teeth occur when people eat hard food such as nuts, ice, or lollies. Biting down onto the hard surface places a lot of additional pressure on your teeth, which could result in cracking or chipping. People of all ages can experience a cracked tooth, no matter how careful they may be. Other common causes include falling onto a hard surface, injury sustained during contact sport, wear and tear, accidentally biting down on a fork or spoon, and bruxism.

I cracked my tooth. Should I be worried?

Most people who crack their teeth do not experience any significant pain, and in most cases cracks or chips will be minor. However, you should schedule an appointment with Sparkling Dental at your earliest convenience so that the extent of the damage can be confirmed and a treatment plan put in place.

There are four different types of cracked teeth, and they are classified below:

  • Microfracture – This is the most common type of crack, characterised by very small fractures/cracks on the enamel. This type of crack does not usually cause pain and will not progress any further, it is merely a cosmetic issue.
  • Fractured Cusp – This refers to a painful crack in a tooth. Pain may be persistent, occur when eating hot/cold foods or whilst chewing.
  • Cracked Tooth – Cracks which are more significant than microfractures will require immediate examination by your dentist to prevent them getting worse.
  • Split Tooth – If a crack extends from the surface of a tooth to the gum line, it will usually require extraction.
  • Vertical Root Fracture – This is the most serious form of cracked tooth, with the crack extending from the crown through to the root beneath the gum.

Potential Complications

Whilst a cracked tooth is not always painful, it is important not to neglect having an examination. If left untreated, your cracked tooth could lead to more serious issues and ongoing pain. Some negative outcomes include:

  • Tongue Damage – depending on where the crack or chip occurred, the rough surface can cause painful cuts to your tongue and cheeks.
  • Increased Tooth Sensitivity – cracked or chipped teeth are more susceptible to pain and sensitivity.
  • Infection – if the crack or chip worsens, the dental pulp may be exposed. This could lead to infection (tooth abscess) and severe pain.
