If your dentist has recommended that you have a root canal, you may be wondering what the process involves. Many patients fear that a root canal is a painful procedure, but this is a misconception as local anaesthesia is used. Root canal treatments are standard treatments to save a tooth that has pulpal infection.

Common Symptoms Which Suggest You May Need a Root Canal

When infection develops inside the tooth, it is usually accompanied by three main symptoms:

  • Toothache and Sensitivity – tooth pain should never be ignored, as it indicates a problem in need of addressing.
  • Inflammation of the Jaw, Face or Neck – a common side effect of infection. If left untreated, swelling may spread across the face and neck.
  • Tooth Discolouration – this could be indicative of nerve damage, particularly if you have bumped, knocked or broken a tooth or suffered an injury during sports.

If you notice any of the above, schedule an appointment with Sparkling Dental immediately so that we can examine your teeth and diagnose the problem.

What to Expect During a Root Canal

If your dentist has observed signs of infection within your teeth, they may recommend root canal therapy (endodontic treatment). This will be performed by an experienced dentist, and it is done with the intention of eliminating infection to save the tooth. Prior to treatment commencing, we will discuss the procedure with you, highlight any risks and offer you the chance to ask questions.

During your root canal procedure, you will receive a dose of local anaesthetic. Your dentist will then identify the affected tooth before removing the infected pulp and nerve. The site is then cleaned and disinfected before a synthetic material is used to seal the space. A dental crown is generally then placed on the tooth to restore its function and add protection.

Is It Painful?

Most people do not feel any pain during the root canal treatment as it is performed under anaesthesia. You may feel a slight sense of discomfort or minor pain for a few days post-treatment, however you may take pain relief medication to manage this.

Is It Essential?

Root canal treatment is often the only way to stop infection whilst saving the tooth. It is always preferable to retain your natural teeth, hence the reason dentists recommend root canal therapy over tooth extraction. It is important to have the procedure performed as early as possible, as infection can spread and start to affect your jaw bone and adjacent teeth.
