The risk of tooth decay exists amongst people of all ages. Whilst good dental hygiene practices will go a long way in helping to prevent cavities, it still remains one of the most common forms of preventable diseases. Dental fillings are the most common form of treatment for tooth decay and trauma damaged teeth, helping to correct a damaged tooth and prevent further decay which may otherwise cause serious infection. Cavities will not repair themselves, so it is important to be aware of the warning signs and visit your dentist as soon as possible so that a treatment plan can be formulated.

What Is a Tooth Filling?

A filling is a simple dental procedure which repairs any cracks or fractures present in your teeth by filling them in with amalgam, porcelain ceramic or gold. With recent advancements in dentistry, it is now also possible to achieve a highly durable filling which matches the colour of your teeth and is made from composite resin.

A small amount of glue is typically used to help the filling adhere to the tooth. For amalgam fillings, a small hole will be made, and the glue will hold the filling in place. These fillings are highly durable and can last a lifetime, although they do discolour with age. The process is similar for other types of fillings, although glass-ionomer cement varieties are naturally adhesive.

10 Signs You May Need a Filling

Your dentist is best placed to determine whether or not a filling is necessary, but there are some typical signs and symptoms you can look out for which may indicate a cavity. If you notice any of the following, contact Sparkling Dental today to schedule an examination.

  • Tooth Sensitivity – a common indicator for tooth decay. Sensitivity may be more severe when eating or drinking very hot or very cold food and beverages.
  • Throbbing Pain in Teeth
  • Pain Whilst Chewing
  • Visible Holes in Teeth
  • Floss tearing when you attempt to floss a specific tooth
  • Food particles getting stuck on or between a particular set of teeth
  • Tooth has a rough texture
  • An existing filling which appears cracked or broken
  • Loss of a tooth filling
  • Chipped or fractured teeth

How Much Does a Filling Cost?

It is important to treat tooth decay in the early stages, as if left untreated you may experience more serious dental issues. The cost of a filling will depend on which type you opt for, but in general they are very affordable at an average cost of around $150-$400. For those on a budget, amalgams will be the best choice. Composite resin will provide the most aesthetically appealing results and are only slightly dearer than amalgams. Gold and porcelain fillings are the most expensive due to the cost of materials and time needed to produce the mould.
